Conference Reflections

From Bill Donahue

Over the past six weeks I headed out to Germany, then left a couple days later to visit my son in Texas at Baylor, then traveled to speak to a group of 400 leaders in California, so I have had little time to really pause and reflect on this year’s Group Life Conference. Here are my takeaways.

1) Each person’s journey into community matters – As I heard stories of community life it just made me more convinced that relationships really are essential for life.
2) Practical input and guidance are needed by every group leader – Russ Robinson’s session gave leaders some very practical help for meetings, and Mindy Caliguire tended to the leader’s soul.
3) Fresh vision is catalytic to a leader and a group – John Burke and Miles McPherson reminded me of the life-on-life impact of groups and compassion.
4) “Everything is an Experiment!” – This has become a mantra for leaders, thanks to Mark Batterson and Heather Zemple.
5) As you seek to build community life, make a serious assessment of our technology-obsessed culture, but be willing to laugh at yourself – Will Miller reminded me of the need for both.

About 12,000 people attended satellite sites, thanks to CCN, and many just needed a shot in the arm, some encouragement for the next leg of the race. I know we have to improve on this year’s experience, but generally the feedback was solid. For the foreseeable future I see this as a major vehicle to inspire leaders and fuel the group life movement. I’d love any input you have on this.

If you are interested in hosting the broadcast next year, let us know. In any case, I think God was working here and we keep watching for His next step.
